I know it’s very fashionable these days to roll one’s eyes at the corporate circus that is Valentine’s Day.
A tacky Hallmark holiday filled with cheesy marketing and overpriced, shitty candy, flowers, and dinner dates. And while I may be someone who usually delights in a good eye roll and mocking the stupidity of the general masses, I really really love Valentine’s Day.
It’s cheerfully campy, delightfully cringey, and spectacularly saccharine - it tickles all of the senses!
I LOVE love.
There’s something so deeply human about observing the greeting card aisle at Target the week leading up to the 14th — people huddled, crowded, and frantic searching for a card that sums up all the complexities of tender emotions they feel for their people.
One of those slap-across-the-face reminders that humanity can be soft and precious.
Love, especially in these flaming-garbage-can times, is an act of resistance. And I do think Valentine’s Day needs a little PR marketing refresh in the platonic category.
Celebrate your people! Hug your dude friend and tell him you love him. Make your neighbor a handmade card. Take your mom out to lunch. Buy your colleague a surprise coffee. Call someone you haven’t talked to in a year. Have craft night with your pals and gossip. Stand up for the vulnerable people in your bubble.
You get the picture.
And with that, some vintage and secondhand finds to get you in the mood for love.
