After almost three years of little to no travel, it feels decently weird to be back in the every-now-and-then grind of schlepping through airport security, overpaying for the basic necessity of water, and shuffling into a crowded airplane where the rules of human decency fly, quite literally, out the window. (Not one but three different people tried to push their way to the front when our plane landed at JFK. Why, WHY?)
The best part of settling further into adulthood, is finally being in a position to bring back goodies from my adventures. For most of my 20s, the only thing I brought home was years of credit card interest and camera roll memories. Now, I’ve taken on the tchotchke approach when exploring new cities. Lots of little things that bring me joy, and help spark a memory.
Here’s a little haul of all the tiny things I brought back from NYC.
(clockwise-ish from top left)
A5 Forest Green Pouch - Purchased at High Tide’s tiny baby NYC store, Corner Shop. I am a sucker for stationery stores, but I am specifically a sucker for a Japanese stationery store. Everything was delightfully organized, petite, and colorful in the perfect way.
Met x Kidrobot Dunny + Magnet + Postcard - The Met’s serif font branding is particularly yummy and while I was tempted by the overpriced lush sweatshirts and structured canvas totes, a tiny magnet and Kidrobot Dunny seemed to be the more space effective solution.
Moulin Rouge Cup - I’m glad they give you a reusable cup with a functional lid for spending $36 on a double pour of champagne. It made it worth it. I think. (More of my very opinionated Broadway review coming in Friday’s dispatch.)
Catbird Spider + Strawberry Charms - Catbird’s strawberry pendant has been on my want list forever and I am very excited to now call it mine! It’s currently 15% off! Go, go! (And so is my new little spider friend!)
Corn on the Cob Candle - I spent way too long in Friends NYC, debilitated by all the food candle options. I think the corn on the cob was the right move. It will live on an open shelf in our kitchen next to our cookbooks.
Martini Greeting Card by David Shrigley - It says “A pleasing situation” and I couldn’t agree more. I will be taking my own newsletter advice and framing this for easy art! Go buy his other stuff - it’s really good. Like this one.
Hawkins New York Lurex Sponges - Went to NYC and bought dish sponges. But FUN dish sponges. Big Night is what I had envisioned when I started my little failed business experiment in 2020 - colorful and curated with the perfect dinner party supplies. More on them on Friday.
Terrazzo Crushed Can Vase - Similar to the corn on the cob candle, I feel a crushed can stone vase makes for delightful conversation.
Velvet Ribbon from M+J Trimming - Found ribbon heaven. Got overwhelmed. But found the perfect velvet colors for bows on our Christmas tree. More on that on Friday.
Forest Green Tiny Container - Also purchased at Corner Shop. Do I have a use for it? It’s unclear at the moment. But oh boy, is it cute.
Ceramic Trinket Dish - Not a purchase but a gift! An original ceramic made by my wonderful pal, Alexia. Very excited to put this on my nightstand for my rings.
Acrylic stacking rings - I have a distinct memory of buying a set of acrylic rings just like this at the Topshop in London when I was 12. Who can say no to three rings for $10? Not me, apparently.
Greetings from New York Card - A reworking of a classic for the memory books.
Sunny Side Egg Magnet - I guess me and fake food are just having a moment. I want all of these.
Fuzzy Monster Cat Toy - Finding fun cat toys is a challenge and I was very happy to come across this gangly catnip monster for Jasper.
Well, there ya have it. I know it’s not necessarily vintage or secondhand related, but maybe you’re a snoop like me who loves a good haul of goodies.
Tune in Friday for a New York themed “10 Things.”
Until then,
xo,
G
