10 Things - Dispatch #006
10 things I've read, loved, watched, wish listed, consumed, etc etc etc
Happy Friday! Let’s get into it.
Red, White and Royal Blue on Amazon Prime - An adaptation from the bestselling book by Casey McQuiston, I came into watching this film with both very high and very low expectations. I read the book early into the pandemic and was obsessed with every page of the mildly cheeseball but sincere, heartfelt romance between the son of POTUS and the prince of England.
This movie was giving Hallmark channel, it was giving ChatGPT wrote the script, it was giving cringey punchlines, Kelly Clarkson Wayfair commercial sets and heavy green screen gaussian blur, but I loved! every! minute! of it! I echo the sentiments of many and wish it had been a mini series that strayed less from the book, but I’ll take any LGBTQIA+ film focusing on queer love, joy, romance, and hot steamy make out sexy times.
I have a distinct memory of being a teenager and watching a movie with my dad and as the credits rolled he loudly said, “I just don’t get why everyone nowadays feels like they have to have a gay character in everything!!” I was still unaware I was like, 90% gay at this point, but remember the hot angry sweaty feels I got as I shot back with, “um, I don’t know, maybe because that better reflects reality?!!!” He didn’t like that answer. Cheers to queers! Go watch this movie and love/hate/love every minute of it and Uma Thurman’s southern drawl.Theater Camp - I laughed. So hard. So much laughing. If you were ever a theater kid, choir kid, or watch-every-musical-Blockbuster-has-to-offer kid, this movie will speak to you.
Sweet Marcel Still Life Puzzle - Enough time has passed from shelter in place fatigue — it is time to reintroduce yourself to the magical enjoyment that is a good puzzle. My wonderfully talented friend Nora, who creates and delicately hand paints charms, has expanded her business into the realm of tabletop fun. She painstakingly curated, staged, and photographed the Baroque still life image of this 1000 piece puzzle. Go forth and pre-order it for a spooky fall night!
Tomato Lamp - Do I *need* a tomato lamp? Probably not. But do I *really want* a tomato lamp? Yes. And I want this one.
Hansel from Basel socks - New socks are one of life’s simplest pleasure and as fall approaches, I am using the change in seasons as an excuse to refresh my collection of comfy, kooky, patterned printed socks. Despite the $30+ price tag, I promise you they’re worth it.
Burger Babie - I discovered Addeline and her art on TikTok and I love the bold lines, poppy colors, and traditional tattoo motifs. I love a sassy cool gorl painting and think one of her pieces would look so cool framed over a bar cart, fireplace, or toilet (that’s a compliment— toilet art is very important!) Follow! Buy! Support up and coming artists!
Sure Thing Chapel Matchbooks - Speaking of cool girls, Amy and Victoria are some of the coolest girls I am lucky to know. They own and operate Sure Thing Chapel on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, the raddest place to elope with your lover! If you’re considering an elopement, one, I can’t encourage that enough, and two, go here!! You won’t regret it. Their very talented friend, Blaze Brooks, created these incredible matchbooks for their chapel and I am very, very obsessed with them.
Marni Market - A rotating collection of home goods and handbags made in collaboration with Colombian artisans, Marni Market has been my gateway into affording one of my favorite brands. Their basket bags range in sizes, colors, and shapes and are perfect for a day where you want to spice up your lewk without thinking too hard about it. I want them all.
Subject to Change Wines - Did I buy this wine for the cute label alone? Yes. Was it worth it? Also yes. Not too sweet, a little tangy, lightly almost, carbonated? I’m not a wine expert but I do know it was damn delicious. My 30-something self woke up with zero hangover this morning after crushing a bottle with my friend Megan at our Red, White and Royal Blue watch party. A huge win in my old age!
Garden State - I’ve been bombarded with Letterboxd TikToks on my FY page where they ask actors their top four films of all time and everyone panics and gives various reasonings for their choices and hopes no one judges them. This, of course, left me thinking what I would choose and if I would feel roasted by pretentious-app-using-film-snobs for my answers.
Judge me all you want!! Garden State is 100% somewhere in my four. It was a film that changed my life at a time I needed to face the fact I was no longer a kid and the soundtrack still makes me feel every single feel like I did when I was 13 and you can’t make me change my mind even if you think it’s an overhyped, over obvious, indie film!! When autumn trickles in, I immediately gravitate towards a soundtrack re-listen and sink into my nostalgia feels. Would you like to join me?
And there you have it.
