10 Things - Dispatch #001
10 things I've read, loved, watched, wish listed, consumed, etc etc etc
Back by very mild demand! Every(ish) Friday I’ll be in your inbox with a deep dive into an eclectic mix of things I’ve been consuming on the world wide web and beyond. Read something interesting? Have a song you can’t get out of your head? Leave a comment and tell me something you’ve been getting into lately because everyone needs a place to put all those open tabs from the browser in their mind. Or something like that.
Anyways, Happy Friday!
With Barbie inching closer to its summer debut, I’ve been refreshing my local movie theater website obsessively to find showtimes for the movie of the summer. Or rather, one of the movies of the summer. Upon finally purchasing tickets for a Barbie advanced screening (!!!) party, I got on Etsy to peruse for vintage Barbie goodies. It was then that I discovered the phenomenon of “Barbenheimer.” If you’re unaware, both Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer hit theaters on the same day. And while I had already seen many a meme on the topic, I had no idea the internet was already so on top of creating absolutely unhinged merchandise. But like, obviously, because it’s the internet. I will be purchasing one as a pop culture keepsake for future generations. The question is, which one?
(Barbie bonus thoughts: I would highly recommend this set tour. The closet! The attention to detail!)
The Wedding Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell - For some very strange reason that I really can’t figure out, I could not put this book down. In all honesty, the plot is not super thrilling and definitely not fast paced, and there are many a complaint on Goodreads about O’Farrell describing too many things, but as someone who has read Tolkien, I disagree — it transported me to Italy in the 1500’s and I loved every minute of it.
Speaking of reading, I selfishly kept some of my favorite vintage tee finds to myself and managed to snag this one off eBay for $20!! It is rapidly climbing to the top of my list of favorite and most prized vintage possessions. A perfectly worn in Jane Austen shirt from the 80’s. Time to rewatch the 2005 Pride and Prejudice for the 235778234 time for *that* hand flex.
Continuing to lean into the book theme, one of my favorite jewelers, Sofia Zakia, (who made my perfect-beautiful-amazing wedding ring stack!) just released her new customizable library card charm and while it’s currently out of my budget, it has certainly skyrocketed to the top of my wishlist. What book would you pick? Deciding would be the hardest part and I feel like I would have a million thoughts, feelings, anxiety, maybe regret after hitting *purchase.*
Seth Rogan’s outfits on Apple TV+’s Platonic. It’s basically just Seth Rogan being Seth Rogan, fine tuned through the discerning eye of costume designer Kameron Lennox, but it immediately made me want to find colorful Marni/Dries Van Noten/Prada/Bode-y vibey button down shirts on The Real Real. Someone please buy the linked Fendi one because the color is abso-tootly incredible and perfect in every way.
I was browsing for something very niche on Pinterest when I stumbled upon a picture of the Pearly Kings and Queens of London and immediately fell into a fascinating internet rabbit hole about the traditions, rich philanthropic history and insanely ornate garments around this Cockney tradition. I would highly recommend the linked article for a tiny baby history lesson. (This also reminded me of an article I read recently about the rapid decline of social clubs/death of subcultures as more people spend time home alone on the internet. We must keep these traditions alive! I want to join a club and have a cool jacket to wear!)
The trailer for “Poor Things” with Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo. I was suggested this after watching the Priscilla trailer on YouTube (which — eek!) and was immediately sucked into this strange story and macabre world. The cinematography feels very Tim Walker and I’m excited to see films like this having a renaissance thanks to what I can only assume is other studios finally recognizing the success of studios like A24, which specialize in exploring more niche genres and story telling.
Speaking of whimsy, I want to be Marie Clare when I grow up. A folk artist based out of Carmel, California, Clare makes the most magical, ethereal creations. She marries my love of Lord of the Rings fantasy magic with I-wanna-be-Florence-Welch magic and I’m obsessed with her ability to craft just about anything into a masterpiece. She sells her designs on Spoonflower and I’m torn on which print to buy fabric in so I can make a summer dress…
This dramatically lit performance from Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood’s sleeper hit “Summer Wine” on the Ed Sullivan show in 1967. If you know me irl you know a) I love this song and b) I will karaoke this and do both parts if drunk enough.
Side Note: Nancy’s makeup here is just *chef’s kisses* — absolutely unmatched smoky eye.I don’t smoke anymore and any form of weed makes me absolutely wildly anxious and paranoid so I have no reason to purchase this despite really really really wanting it, so one of you should swoop it up because how chic would this be to whip out while sipping on a cocktail at a backyard dinner party or sidewalk cafe in Europe. Go! Quick! It’s already in 3 people’s carts!!
And thus concludes this week’s first dispatch of open tabs. Let me know your thoughts, feelings, emotions, etc in the comments or reply to this email. Thank you for reading and supporting me! Please consider sharing this with someone you think might enjoy it!
Until next week,
G
Ooh the Jane tee 😍 ugh I love it all
The Jane tee! Nancy! That fabric!! Perfection. Also, I am surprised in the Barbie/Oppenheimer face off you went team Barbie in spite of your guy Cillian. Though with the death grip barbie-core has had on me these past few months, I completely understand.
